Valorsul
Waste-to-energy pilot campaign — Greater Lisbon, Portugal
The campaign
To help a leading European waste-to-energy operator prepare for a low-carbon future, Hovyu deployed its containerized Hyperion pilot plant directly at the incinerator and captured CO₂ from real flue gas. The mobile unit was shipped to site and mounted in a matter of days, then connected to a live flue-gas line — turning a working incinerator into a hands-on carbon-capture demonstration.
Over the campaign, the pilot demonstrated the full capture cycle — CO₂ absorption and solvent regeneration — on genuine waste-to-energy flue gas, at high capture rates (the Hyperion process is designed for capture rates up to 99%). Just as importantly, it showed robustness: the Hyperion solvent remained stable under real operating conditions with minimal degradation. The campaign data was used to validate Hovyu's process model, giving a reliable basis for scaling the technology up.
The project also underlines the special value of carbon capture in waste-to-energy: because roughly half of the CO₂ from municipal waste is biogenic, capturing and storing it delivers genuine negative emissions — a powerful lever as the sector moves toward inclusion in the EU Emissions Trading System.
Hovyu's activities
Hovyu supplied and operated the pilot; designed and ran the test campaign; validated the process simulation model against the results; and delivered the basis for a full-scale scale-up study.
